Board Of Inquiry To Begin Hearings Into Death Of Cpl Stuart Jones

Commander Australian Theatre, Air-Vice Marshal Bob Treloar today announced that a Board of Inquiry will begin hearing evidence relating to the death of Corporal Stuart MacMillan Jones on Monday, 11 September 2000.

Corporal Jones, of 2 Cavalry Regiment in Darwin, was killed in East Timor on August 9, 2000.

Air-Vice Marshal Treloar said the Board would be led by Colonel Wayne Bowen, an experienced officer who is the Commandant of the Army Promotion Training Centre at Canungra in Queensland.

Other members of the Board include Lieutenant Colonel Peter Herden, a reservist currently serving as the Director of the Army Personnel Agency in Darwin, Lieutenant Colonel Darrell Duncan, the Senior Medical Officer at Headquarters 1 Brigade and Mr Phillip Baer, a civilian member and retired Assistant Commissioner with the Australian Federal Police.

"I join all members of the Australian Defence Force in expressing sadness over Corporal Jones' death but I am confident that the Board will rigorously investigate the circumstances to establish the cause of the incident so that we can move swiftly to guard against any recurrence," Air-Vice Marshal Treloar said.

The Board will convene at 9am at the TCG Building, 80 Mitchell Street, Darwin, and will be open to the public. Members of CPL Jones' family have also been invited to attend the inquiry.
