FIJI TIMES REPORTER WINS PMI SCHOLARSHIP TO USP

SUVA: Matelita Ragogo, a Fiji Times reporter who has been studying part-time at the University of the South Pacific, has won an AusAID Pacific Media Initiative scholarship to attend campus fulltime this semester, the USP journalism newspaper Wansolwara reports.

Ms Ragogo, who is also Wansolwara editor this semester, was one of three recipients for the new scholarship. The other two winners are in Papua New Guinea.

She now hopes to complete her Diploma in Pacific Journalism this semester.

"I consider myself very lucky," she said.

"I felt like giving up at times when I was a part-time student because sometimes I just didn't have time to attend lectures due to the nature of my work.

"But to be on campus full time is a blessing. I am able to concentrate on my studies completely."

A one-year fulltime scholarship at one of three Pacific universities offering journalism programmes is being made available by the PMI next year.

The scholarship is for tertiary studies in journalism and/or media studies, or management, at the University of the South Pacific, University of Papua New Guinea and Divine Word University. http://www.usp.ac.fj/journ/docs/courses/ausaid.html

PMI programme director Dr Helen Molnar told Wansolwara tertiary study gave journalists a better appreciation of the importance of their role in society.

"They will be able to upgrade their journalism skills, learn more about specific areas so that they can become specialists in these areas," she said.

The three training components:

* Media in promotion of governance and community development.

* Management of media communications.

* Radio, video, television, print and online production.

Applications deadline for 2001 is October 30.

* Another USP journalism student, Peter Emberson, has won an exchange scholarship to the University of the West Indies and last week left for Kingston, Jamaica.
