Rebel's Lawyer Lodges Appeal

SUVA: The lawyer of a rebel Fiji Islands soldier accused of wounding two troopers and a television cameraman has appealed against a High Court ruling that he face trial, according to the Fiji Times.

Kelemedi Bulewa appealed against Justice Peter Surman's decision on 2 October 2000 to reverse Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo's verdict two months ago granting immunity to Isoa Karawa on three attempted murder charges and a further count of illegal possession of firearms.

The charges relate to a confrontation between rebels and soldiers on May 27 which resulted in the wounding of two soldiers and a British cameraman working for the American agency Associated Press Television News (APTN), Jerry Harmer.

The shootings happened during the national crisis following the seizure of Parliament by rebel coup plotter George Speight and the holding of the elected government hostage for 56 days.
