SUVA: Outgoing Vice-Chancellor Esekia Solofa today confirmed that his sucessor as head of the 12-nation University of the South Pacific will be a former governor of Fiji's Reserve Bank, Savenaca Siwatibau.

"The USP council today formally appointed Mr Siwatibau as the next vice-chancellor," Solofa told http://www.usp.ac.fj/journ/ Pacific Journalism Online.

The two-day council meeting ended this evening.

Siwatibau's term will begin in February.

The appointment follows a controversy in May in which the nomination of the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rajesh Chandra, ahead of Siwatibau was leaked and the selection process was reopened after protests by some Fijian and islands students.

Chandra had been nominated by the ousted Chaudhry government on behalf of Fiji while Siwatibau had been put forward by Vanuatu.

Solofa is from Samoa.
