Rabuka Started Giving Orders, Says Commander

Issue No: 187; 9 November 2000

Military Commander, Frank Bainimarama says at the height of the loyalist military assault against the rebel soldiers, former army commander Maj. Gen. Started giving orders against his orders.

Bainimarama told today's Fiji Times that when the army assault began, Rabuka gave an order to an officer to obey his instructions. He said: "I can not understand whose side Major-General Rabuka is on and what his point was in making that statement. The Major-General went to the camp uninvited. I did not invite him and neither did Home Affairs. The person he said he spoke to in Home Affairs is not an official of the ministry".

Rabuka is now under investigation for his role in the attempted assassination of the army commander and an attempted coup.

Yesterday the media reported that some CRW soldiers involved in the attempted coup were "high on something".

Meanwhile, the movement restriction order placed on army's Lt. Col. Filipo Tarakinikin and Col. Ulaiasi Vatu remain in force. The media today reported that Vatu has defied the order to not to talk to the media.
