Special aviation web site wins top awards

A unique Australian aviation web site has taken out two prestigious internet awards.

The site - Flying Australia 2000 - has been recognised for being at the cutting edge of internet technology and information delivery.

It won the Australian Financial Review Internet Awards 2000, Community/Special Interest section, and took out the tourism category in the Asia Pacific Queensland Information Technology and Telecommunications Awards 2000.

Flying Australia 2000 was developed to help pilots taking to Australia's skies during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It is now being expanded to become a permanent on-line resource for local and overseas pilots flying across the nation.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority developed Flying Australia 2000, with assistance from Airservices Australia. JSA Design was responsible for site design and Ice Media for the construction work.

CASA's Director of Aviation Safety, Mick Toller, says the web site played a key role in delivering a perfect air safety record during the Olympics.

"In the month during the Olympics and Paralympics there were more than 200,000 hits on the Flying Australia 2000 site," Mr Toller says.

"That means there were literally thousands of pilots from right around the world who were getting vital updates on the special air safety rules in place for the Olympics and Paralympics.

"The site also gave these pilots essential information on many aspects of flying safely in Australia.

"CASA is now about to start work on rebuilding the site into a permanent resource centre for all pilots, with flight guides, aerodrome details and other operational and safety information.

"The site will continue to use animation and other visual tools to make the information easy to access and easy to understand."
