Justice Langa To Revisit Fiji
Issue No: 376 14 January 2001
The Special Envoy of the
Commonwealth, Justice Pius Langa will be making
his
second visit to Fiji coming week.
Justice Langa had
visited Fiji in early December and met with the
regime
ministers, the representatives of the elected
government, and ngos. It is
understood that the followup
visit is intended collect more material to
finalise his
report to the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group
(CMAG).
The CMAG meets again in March and Fiji is
expected to be on top of its
agenda.
In September, the
CMAG had decided to "appoint a Special Envoy who
would
act as a facilitator to accelerate the restoration
of democracy and to
promote national unity in Fiji".
While Justice Langa's report is expected to form the basis
of the CMAG's
discussion, so far the regime has continued
to stick to its road map that
was firmly rejected by the
CMAG. Whether Justice Langa manages to get the
regime to
change its stand now is still to be seen.
