More terrorists freed

Another 17 terrorists apprehended by the army in Vanua Levu for terrorist activities have been bound over by the Labasa Magistrates Court.

The 17, charged with unlawful assembly and unlawful use of motor vehicle, appeared before magistrate Eparama Rokoika. They pleaded guilty and were freed. The unlawful use of motor vehicle charge relates to theft and use of private vehicles for terrorist purposes.

This case comes in the series of cases where terrorists have been either freed, given suspended sentences, bound over, or set free after serving a few days in jail.

The trend is a clear indicator of what is to come with the terrorist George Speight case. Suva residents have often seen Speight supporters and Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo together in a Suva eating outlet. The prosecution also reported that Temo habitually shook hands with Speight and his group when they went to Nukulau Island for the court case. So far the prosecution has not filed any application to have Temo disqualify himself on grounds of bias.
