Qarase set to renege on his promise to the court

Regime Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase is set to renege on his promise to the people of Fiji that he and his regime will abide by the Court decision. The promise was delivered to the Fiji Court of Appeal on the last day of hearing last week.

In his statement this evening, Qarase stated that the implementation of the decision will take time. He said: "I am sure the Judges will appreciate that we must now manage our way carefully through a most delicate stage of transition to ensure implementation. This is not going to happen overnight."

He stated further: "Many social and political questions must be considered. We will be guided at all times by the welfare of the people and the peace and security of the country".

Qarase stated that his team of lawyers will study and analyse the judgment, and make a presentation to his cabinet on Tuesday. The cabinet decision will then be conveyed to the Acting President Ratu Josefa Iloilo. Ratu Josefa will then report to the Great Council of Chiefs.

By avoiding to make any clear and unequivocal statement that he and his regime will abide by the decision now, Qarase has created much uncertainty in the country.

The nation now has now put its faith in the Acting President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo who in his statement tonight made it clear that he will abide by the Court decision.
