Police Charged For Robbery

Issue No: 957 20 July 2001

Three policemen have been arrested for robbery from the home of murdered Red Cross Director John Scott.

The robbery took place days after the brutal murder of John Scott and his partner in his own home. The three, with ages ranging from 22 to 43 years, pleaded not guilty to breaking and entering and stealing household items. The three were deployed by the police department to guard the house of the murdered man.

The media reports that the three are suspended from the force.

The incidence of policemen involved in crime in Fiji has shot up drastically. One report stated that during the past 12 months, 18 cases of crime were reported in which police were the major suspects.

The morale in the police force has declined considerably since the revelation that the Police Commission Isikia Savua was involved with the terrorists in trying to overthrow the elected government. Public confidence in Savua and the police force has collapsed.
