Millions watch Television Coverage of US Tragedy

High numbers of people watched the all day coverage of Wednesday’s tragic events in the United States of America by TV One and TV3 especially first thing in the morning. The coverage extended through until lunchtime on Thursday 13 September.

Figures released by AC Nielsen for the NZ Television Broadcasters’ Council showed that one third of all households were tuned in on Wednesday morning amounting to an estimated 760,000 people. Those viewing numbered three times more than the usual viewing figures for daytime television.

Around two thirds of all households had the television sets on in the evening between 6 PM and 7 PM and of them, nearly 1.3 million people were watching the news coverage on the two channels – TVOne and TV3.

The Council’s executive director, Bruce Wallace, said that the high level of interest underlined the decision of TVOne and TV3 to devote their whole resources to continuous coverage.
