Update On Mail Deliveries

October 18, 2001

UPDATE ON MAIL DELIVERIES

Further to a release issued this morning, New Zealand Post would like to advise customers that they may see reduced mail quantities and in some cases no mail at all as a result of mail centre closures overnight and yesterday.

Wellington, Nelson, Rotorua and Waikato Mail Centres are currently closed due to precautions taken after the discovery of suspicious substances.

Nelson Mail Centre is expected to re-open at 3.00pm today and there is a possibility the Wellington Mail Centre will re-open as well.

The South Auckland Mail Centre was closed overnight but re-opened this morning.

Hand-written inbound international mail is being temporarily held at the International Mail Centre in Auckland. A review of that decision is expected this afternoon. Typed-addressed inbound international mail is being processed as per usual.

Anthrax Project Co-ordinator Dale Stevens said he regretted any inconvenience to customers but it was prudent these precautions be taken.

"We have contingencies in place and are working as fast as we can to get our mail systems back to normal," he said.

Customers with private boxes at any of the closed mail centres will be unable to access that mail today.
