SHOT KANAK DIES AFTER ETHNIC CLASHES
NOUMEA (Pasifik Nius):
A young Kanak has died from wounds suffered during ethnic
clashes between Kanaks and Wallisians at Saint Louis, on the
outskirts of Noumea, Radio Djiido reports.
The man, Jean-Marie Goyetta, 26, died on Sunday after being in hospital for four weeks.
He suffered stomach wounds when shot during the clashes at Saint Louis on January 8.
The radio reported that he was the first person to die from the clashes, which began last December.
The radio said authorities feared that his death could trigger further unrest.
Problems between Kanaks and Wallisians have been on the rise in New Caledonia.
In the past, migrant Wallisians have settled in the the Saint Louis tribal area.
Kanaks are reported to not be happy because for some time the Wallisian community has expanded its landholding.
The chiefs of Saint Louis tribe are trying to calm young Kanaks who are really unhappy after the death of Goyetta.
Now authorities are trying to find solutions. They will try to find other land to put all the Wallisians who live in Saint Louis tribe, the radio said.
