WANSOLVISIN CREATES HISTORY

SUVA (USP Beat/Pacific Media Watch): WansolVisin has become the first regional television news programme to be broadcast simultaneously to all 12 of the University of the South Pacific's centres in its member countries via its satellite telecommunications network, USPNet.

WansolVisin is a 30min documentary produced by second and third-year television journalism students.

Three successful weekly programmes were prepared by the students for broadcast from the university's Media Centre at Laucala Campus, Suva, Fiji.

Acting journalism coordinator Steve Sharp said the programme hoped to repackage the contents and distribute it to other television outlets.

"This project is just the beginning. We hope to keep the momentum going until next semester," he said.

"Students are getting hands-on experience on digital video production and they are able to see their stories broadcast through this programme.

"It's good preparation for many of them who go on to have work attachments at Fiji One television.

"We will continue to cooperate with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) on regional television projects as we have done in the past and explore overseas outlets for some of our material," Sharp said.

"We need information niche markets for our news content."

Production of WansolVisin was made possible through the recent purchase of new digital camera and editing equipment by the School of Humanities with production project funding assistance from UNESCO arranged by former coordinator David Robie.

Post-production work on the programme was carried out by Sangeeta Singh, a video editor at USP's Media Centre.
