July 18, 2003: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“NION Demands Bush Administration Be Held Accountable for Lies”

A major news poll shows that 56% of Americans now stand with The Not In Our Name Project (NION) in believing that Bush administration officials were “hiding important elements of what they knew” or were “mostly lying” (CBS News, July 10th, 2003).

Yet the disingenuousness of the Bush administration goes beyond what Condoleezza Rice characterizes as just 16 words pertaining to uranium and Africa. Among other deceptions, Secretary of State Colin Powell, in his February 5th address to the Security Council, used a British intelligence report plagiarized from a twelve-year old doctoral thesis. The administration also claimed the Hussein regime was linked to al-Qaeda, but no proof has ever been provided.

“The administration has set a dangerous precedent of pre-emptive war. They must be held accountable to the people of the world as to their real motivation for invading Iraq,” says Molly Klopot, of NION.

The Bush Administration lied because they’re afraid to tell the American people the truth about why they attacked Iraq,” said Joe Urgo, of NION. “Their agenda is to control the world, and they don’t want us to realize that. If people realize the truth then resistance will grow.”

Urgo continued, “They have directly threatened North Korea, Iran, and Syria, and have put a total of 60 countries under threat. They have stated that they have the right to attack even non-nuclear nations with weapons of mass destruction if they decide that country might in the future threaten our national interests. It’s not that NION is claiming there’s going to be another war, they’re saying it.”

“We can’t go back and change history, but we must learn from what happened,” said Robina Niaz, of NION. “Wars are being hatched around the world in our name based on these lies, and half the country believes this is OK. As people living in this country we must demand that the truth be uncovered and those responsible for the fabrications be brought to justice.”

The Not In Our Name Project was founded in March of 2002, vowing to resist not only what has been called by the Bush administration “a war that will last a generation,” but also the detentions and roundups of immigrants and attacks on civil liberties. The Not In Our Name Pledge of Resistance states, “Not in our name will you wage endless war…there can be no more deaths, no more transfusions of blood for oil.” (Full text viewable at www.notinourname.net)
