Visits to India and South Africa Will Preview UNICEF's State of the World's Children Report, Coming in December

NEW YORK, 31 October 2003 ? UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy will visit ten cities over the next six weeks in the lead-up to the release of the annual State of the World's Children report on December 11.

Bellamy's travels, including stops in India and South Africa, will spotlight child survival, AIDS orphans, and humanitarian emergencies ? themes connected by the underlying urgency of getting all children into school, especially girls.

Week of 3 Nov: Papua New Guinea, Australia

Ms. Bellamy visits UNICEF programs on the small island nation before visiting with donors and government officials of the large island nation.

Week of 10 Nov: India, The Netherlands

Ms. Bellamy takes part in the global Education for All conference in Delhi, focusing on educating girls. She then stops in Amsterdam for a news conference on the role of sport in healthy child development.

Week of 17 Nov: United States, India

The UNICEF Executive Director goes to Seattle for meetings with the Gates Foundation on child survival. She then travels to Washington D.C. for the launch of the UN consolidated appeal for emergency countries. Then onward to New Delhi for the India Economic Summit.

Week of 24 Nov: South Africa

Ms. Bellamy heads to Johannesburg for a regional meeting on HIV/AIDS. At a press conference, she will launch an important UNICEF study on the perils faced by millions of African children orphaned by AIDS.

Week of 1 Dec: United States

In New York, Ms. Bellamy will lead an inter-generational dialogue about AIDS with young people, and will launch a new website focused exclusively on young people and HIV.

In Los Angeles, she will celebrate 50 years of Goodwill Ambassadors for UNICEF at a gala featuring dozens of global stars and champions for children.

Week of 8 Dec: Switzerland, United Kingdom

Bellamy presides over her final meeting as Chair of the Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunization in Geneva, then travels to London for a day of media interviews.

On Thursday 11 December, she launches UNICEF's State of the World's Children report, which presents the case that human development efforts need a more people-focused approach, especially with regard to girls and women. It analyzes how getting all girls into school would bring down barriers for boys as well, and would act as a booster rocket for broader development success.

Week of 15 Dec: Democratic Republic of Congo

Ms. Bellamy visits this war-torn home to millions of children to examine issues of child survival, polio eradication, and sexual abuse of girls.
