Zuma to launch the African Centre for HIV/AIDS

Deputy President Zuma to launch the African Centre for HIV/AIDS Management

Deputy President Jacob Zuma will tomorrow 16 February 2005, officially launch the African Centre for HIV/AIDS Management Unit of the University of Stellenbosch.

In 2000 Stellenbosch University and the National School of Public Health at Medunsa responded to a request by Deputy President Jacob Zuma to develop a programme on HIV and AIDS management, as part of the Partnership against AIDS in the academic sector. Since the inception of the programme, more than 800 students from 55 countries have been trained.

After a further request from the Presidency in 2002, Stellenbosch reached out to the continent and developed programmes for the CEOs of companies. Four workshops were held in North, East, West and Southern Africa, in partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

A total of 200 delegates representing labour organisations, employers and government from 31 countries have taken part in workshops in the Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Morocco and Stellenbosch over the past two years.

All these activities led to the formation of a separate unit at Stellenbosch University: the African Centre for HIV/AIDS Management, which will be launched tomorrow.
