Israeli Forces Wound 5 Palestinians and Take 4 Prisoner in West Bank

Israeli Occupation forces shot and wounded five Palestinians in the towns of Marda and Salfeet, and took prisoner four others across the West Bank, while a house in Beir Nabala was demolished and another occupied in Hebron.

An IPC correspondent said Israeli forces in the village of Deir Ballout, west of Salfeet, opened fire on demonstrators who were protesting against work being carried out by armoured Israeli bulldozers on Israel’s annexation Wall in the village. Israeli soldiers were hidden among the olive groves on both sides of the road leading to the village and they ambushed and detained everyone’s vehicles. Local sources said that a change in the Wall's route would lead to the annexation of even more land belonging to the village.

A fifth person from the town of Marda has been shot and wounded by Israeli soldiers, who fired at people protesting against the theft of their lands for Israel’s Wall. Local sources reported that Samer Abdullah was shot in the leg and taken to hospital.

The Israelis took three people prisoner and their whereabouts are unknown. Kamal Yousef, Marda's mayor, said also that Israeli troops had fired indiscriminately on protesting farmers as the Israeli Army bulldozed their land and olive groves.

Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished a two-storey house in the town of Beir Nabala, northwest of Jerusalem, and destroyed a number of cattle stalls. Eyewitnesses told the WAFA news agency that bulldozers guarded by the Israeli military knocked down the house of the Al Kaabneh family in the town after cordoning the area off.

In Hebron, an IPC correspondent said Israeli troops forcibly seized and occupied a four-storey house in the old town of Hebron City and turned it into a military post, raising the Israeli flag on the roof.

Israeli forces also attacked a peaceful anti-Wall demonstration in the village of Bal'een, west of Ramallah. Abdullah Abu Rahmeh, the co-ordinator of the popular committee to resist the Wall, told the WAFA news agency that Israeli soldiers not only physically assaulted the demonstrators with rifle butts but also shot and fired tear-gas gas canisters at them. Five of the protesters had to be taken to hospital after inhaling tear gas.

Israeli X-ray Devices in Rafah Border Terminal ‘a War Crime’

Specialists and participants at a workshop in Gaza came to the conclusion that the X-ray screening machine used by Israeli occupation forces at the Rafah border terminal constitutes a serious danger to the health of the Palestinian people and that it amounts to a war crime. The workshop, organised by the Women’s Medical and Information Center in Gaza, made clear that use of the screening device breaches humanitarian conventions.

Dr Jomaa Al Saqqa, the Director of Public Relations at Al Shifa Hospital, said that the person to be screened is put into a small room with the feet placed on a special area of the floor. X-ray images are twice made, which inflicts a high dose of radiation on the subject. Dr. Al Saqqa pointed out that this is a serious issue and the Minister of Civil Affairs, Mohammed Dahlan, is taking a personal interest in it, noting that those who are screened by the machine suffer nausea and severe headaches.

Anwar Atallah, a physicist specialising in radiological protection, explained that use of industrial strength ionizing rays on human beings posed grave dangers to health. A radiology expert at Al Shifa Hospital, Dr. Fatema Al Hendi, also spoke about the risks of radiation on pregnant women. There were risks of fetal mutations and deformation. She added that radiation is particularly dangerous during the first three months of pregnancy. There were dangers also to both sperm and ovaries.

Dr. Anwar Diab, a radiation specialist, said that the X-ray machines used in hospitals produce high-energy radiation that penetrates, then leaves the body. The radiation produced by the X-ray machine used by the Israelis is in the form of very concentrated low energy that tends to remain inside the body. This can have a variety of undesirable side effects. The doctor also noted that the Israeli machine violates human dignity as well as health as it reveals the person naked.

Jamil Sarhan, a lawyer from the Al Mizan Centre for Human Rights, said that should the radiation from the machine be proven harmful to health, the Israeli Government will be liable to extremely grave charges. He pointed out that international laws state that the Occupying Power must provide the Occupied population with proper health care and treatment. The machine would constitute a serious breach of this law and it would be considered a war crime.
