Two West Papuans Shot Dead By Police in Wamena

On the 15th of May 2006 there was a demonstration outside the court house in Wamena, West Papua.

Two West Papuans were shot dead by Police.

Serpi (Sodema) Hubi (65 years old) was shot in the head. He died instantly. Mokanineak Kossy (47 years old) was shot in the chest, right arm and thigh. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the local hospital in Wamena.

In addition, up to 5 were taken to the local hospital in Wamena with wounds. Details of those wounded are contained in the Indonesian language document attached. A separate Indonesian language document outlines what happened and contains photos of the incident.

Demonstrators had arrived at the court house to express their support for the local Bupati, David Hubi who has been charged with corruption.

The security forces put on a large show of force. Local police and mobile police (Brimob) were backed up by military from the local 1702 district command, infantry battalion 756 and reinforcements brought in from the command in Jayapura (Trikora 17).
