Aust: Greens to work with unions to oppose uranium
Greens plan to work with unions to oppose Martin Ferguson’s uranium plan
Greens MP and industrial relations spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said Greens members plan to work with unions in NSW to build up broad opposition to Martin Ferguson’s uranium plan.
“Unions in NSW could be the key to Martin Ferguson gaining the numbers for his ‘cradle to grave’ uranium policy” Ms Rhiannon said.
“A number of unions in NSW, including the MUA and the CFMEU, have a fine history in opposing the mining and export of uranium products.
“Over the years the Greens have worked closely with many unionists in opposing the development of a nuclear industry in this country and we will continue with this cooperation to defeat the Ferguson scheme.
“I plan to meet with leading union officials in coming days to offer our cooperation in building the progressive campaign to stop Labor adopting John Howard’s uranium policy.
“An increasing number of unionists recognise that by defeating Ferguson’s uranium plan we can have a win-win for the environment and working people.
“There is growing awareness that the uranium industry will rob this country of jobs growth because it will destroy the clean green energy industry,” Ms Rhiannon said.
