SPC marks International Youth Day 2006 with award scheme
Friday, 11 August, 2006, SPC Headquarters, Noumea, New Caledonia – Saturday, 12 August is International Youth Day. The theme of the day this year is ‘Tackling poverty together’ and with its call to young people to Team up, Organise, Celebrate, and Take action! the Pacific Youth Bureau is taking practical action to advance the theme.
The Bureau, which is based in the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), has initiated a scheme that will give four cash awards of US$2,500 each to support the establishment of new youth projects aimed at generating income for young people. The scheme is part of the Bureau’s efforts to implement Component 2 (Nurturing Sustainable Livelihoods) of the Pacific Youth Strategy 2010 (PYS2010), which states: “Becoming self-sufficient remains a great challenge for all young Pacific Islanders. To achieve this goal we want to encourage them to actively engage in youth-led enterprises and income-generating initiatives that will enable them to live sustainable lifestyles”.
To get things rolling, the Bureau invites written submissions from youth organisations in SPC member countries who are interested in setting up income-generating projects for young people.
Submissions must be endorsed by
the Ministry or Department responsible for youth development
in each country and submitted by fax or email through the
SPC focal point (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) in each
country to:
