RAMSI SC welcomes SIG growth strategy

RAMSI Special Coordinator, Tim George, today welcomed a number of recent decisions on development, planning and the economy.

Mr George said that these decisions show the determination of Solomon Islanders to put the setbacks of the tension years behind them.

“Although I have been in Solomon Islands for a short time, it has quickly become obvious that the Government and people want to make the right decisions to keep strong growth in the economy going well into the future,” Mr George said.

Fair and simple processes have been put in place to encourage investment, improve revenue collection and reduce corruption.

“The Government should be congratulated for its support of local business development and creating a fair and simple tax system,” the Special Coordinator said.

“Developments in infrastructure will make a big impact on rural development in the provinces and create opportunities for new businesses.

“The government is showing by its actions that it understands the need for broad based economic growth. It aims to avoid too much reliance on logging and fisheries.

“These are important steps preparing Solomon Islands to respond to the significant challenges it faces in the near future. These challenges arise from a fast growing population and future reduction in income from logging.”

The RAMSI Special Coordinator noted the SIG commitment to competition in telecommunication services and to improved financial services in rural areas. These initiatives, together with the SIG National Transport Plan and the government’s focus on rural development, represent ‘road maps’ for development to benefit ordinary Solomon Islanders. They would help communities prosper and give people access to much needed services.

Mr George said the regional assistance mission was pleased to be working with the government to help create better conditions for a strong economy. He said he looked forward to a close and productive relationship with the Solomon Islands Government in the RAMSI partnership.

“True partnerships are built on listening and understanding and I look forward to this continuing in Solomon Islands as we work together to develop a strong and confident nation.”
