Special Coordinator expresses heartfelt sympathy to Solomon Islanders
RAMSI Special Coordinator Tim George met today with Prime Minister Sogavare to personally express his heartfelt sympathy to Solomon Islanders affected by Monday’s earthquakes and tsunami and pledge RAMSI’s continued support to the government’s relief efforts.
“On behalf of all the members of the Regional
Assistance Mission, we are deeply saddened to hear of the
loss of life, injury and destruction as a result of Monday's
tragedy”, Mr George said.
Mr George said RAMSI will
continue to help in what ever way it can, supporting and
working closely with the appropriate Solomon Islands
Government Authorities especially the Solomon Islands Police
Force in their efforts to respond to this national disaster.
“Solomon Islands authorities are providing a
comprehensive response to the disaster and RAMSI’s
Participating Police Force has been able to provide people,
aircraft, boats and some emergency supplies to assist them
do their job.”
“I am particularly happy to have had the chance to meet today with the Prime Minister, who is providing strong leadership for the government’s response to this national tragedy,” Mr George said.
Mr George said the effects of disaster is being felt by everyone in Solomon Islands including RAMSI and he had written to both the Governor General and Prime Minister to formally extend the sympathy of all members of the Regional Assistance Mission to the leaders and people of Solomon Islands at this difficult time.
“Many local RAMSI staff have families in
Western and Choiseul Provinces and many of the mission’s
members deployed from Pacific Island states know only too
well from their own countries experience how devastating
such natural disasters can be.”

families at this difficult time.”
Mr George said the RAMSI Participating Police Force will now be focusing on police infrastructure and welfare in support of the Solomon Islands Police efforts to re-establish operational police stations in the affected areas as quickly as possible.
