Possible Remains Of Australian Diggers Found

Possible Remains Of Australian Diggers Found

The remains that could possibly be those of two Australian soldiers declared missing-in-action in 1965 during the Vietnam War have been found by “Operation Aussies Home” while excavating a burial site.

Operation Aussies Home, supported by the Australian Government, recently commenced digging in Dong Nai province of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and uncovered what appear to be human remains, military artefacts and other items of interest. Further careful excavation uncovered bone fragments, teeth and a button of the type used on Australian Army clothing of the 1960s.

The recovery and repatriation of the remains of fallen Australian service personnel is of great importance to Defence, the Australian Government and to all Australians.

These soldiers died in the service of their nation and it is fitting that we do our utmost to bring them home and formally pay tribute to their sacrifice”, Mr Billson said.

The Australian Defence Force is built on the dedication, courage and sacrifice of those that have gone before us. It is important that we remember their deeds and honour their memory.”

Defence is preparing a team of forensic specialists, hopeful of departing in the coming days, to assist Operation Aussies Home in identifying whether these remains are those of the missing-in-action Australian soldiers.

The Australian Government and Defence community are grateful to Operation Aussies Home who, as a result of their tireless research and commitment, have located these remains. Mr Jim Bourke and his team have pursued this search with great vigour and diligence and deserve great credit. The Vietnamese authorities have also been very helpful and their compassion and respect for our fallen soldiers brings great credit to their country” said Mr Billson.

Mr Billson said that the Australian Government had supported the endeavours of Operation Aussies Home with diplomatic support and funding commitments of more than $60 000 over the last year.

Should the remains be identified as those of the missing-in-action soldiers, Defence will arrange their repatriation to Australia and proper burial in close consultation with the families.
