Government Minister Asks Opposition Leader To Stop Politicizing The Tsunami Situation

Minister of Public Services Hon Joses Sanga is urging Opposition Leader Fred Fono to work closely with the government instead of politically degrading positive efforts to address the humanitarian crisis facing survivors of the April 2 Tsunami.

Mr Sanga said it is immature for the Opposition leader to seize the disastrous situation to make political statements.

Mr Sanga describes Fono’s statements as merely political with little regard to the humanitarian crisis in the Tsunami stricken areas in Western and Choiseul provinces.

“Let’s not use the situation for a political debate but deal with the situation in a positive approach,” Mr Sanga said.

Mr Fono earlier this week attacked Prime Minister Sogavare’s delegation that made a weeklong visit to the affected areas in the two provinces.

He said the trip was very late and failed to included members of the Opposition.

But Mr Sanga said that was not true.

The minister said Fono had assured the Prime Minister on the day of their departure to the affected areas that he would join the delegation to the western provinces.

“We were at the airport and Fono flew in from Australia and he had assured the Prime Minister that he would join the visit,” Mr Sanga said

However, Mr Sanga said they had waited for Fono who never showed-up.

The MP for East Malaita said whilst Fono was critical about the PM not making the trip in the first week - it was a wrong time to do that.

Mr Sanga said the government was busy round the clock trying to deliver relief supplies to the victims.

He said they had daily cabinet briefings and were fully informed about the situation on the ground.

Mr Sanga said the government had exploited avenues on how to minimize delays and adopt an effective strategy - considering the scattered islands.

“Government is right on top of the situation,” the minister said.

Mr Sanga said it is important that the people get their supplies in time so that by the time the PM makes the visit they would already receive their supplies.

He said it’s important that national leaders work together in hard times like this.
