Royal Australian Navy Participates In Exercise Singaroo
The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) is hosting Exercise SINGAROO from 7 to 11 May 2007. This joint exercise involves the Royal Australian Navy and Singapore’s Navy and Air Force. SINGAROO will take place in the Malacca Strait and the South China Sea. The opening ceremony for the exercise was officiated by the RSN’s Fleet Commander, Rear-Admiral Tan Kai Hoe, and the Royal Australian Navy Commander Australian Fleet, Rear-Admiral Davyd Thomas, on 7 May 2007.
Both navies are continuing to develop their combined maritime surveillance, air defence, anti-submarine warfare and maritime security skills. SINGAROO will also include shore activities in the form of professional discussions and table-top (war game) exercise.
The ships involved in Exercise SINGAROO include the RSN’s RSS VENGEANCE and RSS VICTORY (missile corvettes), RSS SEA WOLF (missile gunboat), RSS FEARLESS (anti-submarine patrol vessel) and RSS CHIEFTAIN (submarine), and the RAN’s HMAS ADELAIDE (guided missile frigate).
The RSN’s F-50 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF) F16 and F5 fighter aircraft and E2C Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning aircraft are also participating in the exercise.
Exercise SINGAROO is the eleventh in the series of maritime warfare exercises that provides the opportunity for the Singapore and Australian navies and air forces to enhance their mutual understanding of operational procedures and tactics, to strengthen their ability to operate together, and to further develop professional ties.
Australia and Singapore have a strong and diverse Defence relationship covering exercises, exchanges and training and we value the opportunity to conduct exercises such as SINGAROO whenever possible.
