Auki Gears Up For Tradeshow And Independence Celebrations
By Brian Wanga
In Auki
The Malaita Provincial Capital, Auki, is currently in a makeover in coming weeks as the township prepares itself to host the 2007 Trade and Cultural Show which also links to the National Independence Celebrations this July.
Infrastructure development including road works by the Kitano Contractors is currently underway.
Similarly the Auki Beautification Committee in liaison with a team of Landscapers is preparing Auki to accommodate and host the July Independence Celebrations in a beautiful environment.
The preparations started following the National Government’s formal announcement last week to shift the 7th July Independence celebration and the show to Malaita province.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Jeffery Wickham said the decision was based on the present government’s bottom-up-approach policy – which intended to spread national development to provinces.
Mr Wickham said it is an opportunity for Malaita to show the world of it’s economic and social development potentials and aspirations.
Deputy Provincial Secretary Mr Robert Kaua said tentative arrangements are in place with a local Steering Committee being drawn up to work, liaise and facilitate with the Office of the Prime Minister.
“An Independence account has been opened at the bank and we are just preparing to host the celebrations in Auki” said Mr Kaua.
The official venue for the Independence Celebration is at the Aligegeo Football Stadium.
The weeklong show will be officially concluded on Saturday 7th July.
The Solomon Islands Small and Medium Enterprise Committee (SMEC) is working closely with the Malaita Entrepreneurs Association to spearhead preparations for the upcoming show.
The Independence Celebrations at Aligegeo will be marked on Friday 6th of July.
