Dedicated Citizens Receive Independence Awards

More than 100 dedicated Solomon Islanders were honored with national awards by the Solomon Islands government during the 29th Independence Anniversary Celebration at Aligegeo Stadium, Malaita Province on Friday.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare announced the recipients which included honors for long serving public officers in various sectors, arts and sports personalities and special honors for courage and bravery during the April 2 Quake and Tsunami in the Western and Choiseul provinces.

Fifty among sixty four recipients of the 2007 independence awards were honored with the Solomon Islands Silver Medal for demonstrating the selfless act of extreme courage, extraordinary compassion and bravery during the April 2 disaster.

Others were awarded a Silver medal for long and dedicated service in various areas including politics, commerce, tourism and other social services.

Mr Sogavare also announced the 2006 independence awards of which ten recipients received the Cross of Solomon Islands for long and dedicated service in various professions.

Among the 2006 Independence Award recipients, 29 received the Solomon Islands Silver medal.

The Governor General His Excellency Sir Nathaniel Waena also presented medals to two local Arts and Sports Personalities for their commitment to the nation.

They are Joseph (Joe) Saemei for his excellence in the sports of boxing and Artist Eddie Deding for his excellence in art and painting.
