OBG(W) Soldier Slightly Wounded In Southern Iraq Mortar Attack
An Overwatch Battle Group (West) (OBG(W) soldier suffered slight wounds in an indirect fire attack against an Australian patrol on Tuesday evening, Australian Eastern Standard Time.
An OBG(W) Bushmaster Infantry Mobility Vehicle was also lightly damaged in the attack.
The Australian patrol provided immediate first aid to the casualty and evacuated him to a nearby Coalition medical facility for further treatment.
Defence Spokesperson Brigadier Andrew Nikolic said the attack highlighted the constant dangers faced by Australians operating in Iraq.
"Initial reports indicate this was an isolated and opportunistic attack against the OBG(W) patrol," Brigadier Nikolic said.
"The patrol's reaction, force protection measures and personal protective equipment played a significant role in limiting the overall effectiveness of the attack.
"Thankfully the soldier's wounds were only slight and he is expected to make a speedy and full recovery."
The wounded soldier is expected to return to duty with OBG(W) after a short period of recovery within Iraq. His immediate next of kin have been informed of the incident. The soldier's name will not be released.
The Bushmaster was recovered from the scene and will be returned to service with OBG(W) following minor repairs.
