ADF Prepares For APEC Leaders' Week

Australian Defence Force Prepares For APEC Leaders' Week

As part of ongoing preparations to support the New South Wales Police in the lead up to APEC Leader's week, the ADF will be conducting a range of training exercises in and around the Sydney CBD over the coming weeks.

Of particular note, the ADF's east coast counter terrorist capability - which includes elements of; 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment; and the Incident Response Regiment - will conduct essential training involving the use of Black hawk helicopters in Sydney.

The ADF will also participate in land based exercises with New South Wales Police in the metropolitan area over the coming weeks. Again, increased noise and military vehicle traffic may be experienced for short periods of time in the vicinity of these exercises.

New South Wales Police Commander Peter Lennon said police valued the support of the ADF in the lead up to APEC07.

"ADF training operations of this nature will cause a slight increase in military traffic for specific periods with some increased noise associated with the training. Just as the police presence in Sydney increases in the lead up to Leader's Week, the presence of the ADF will assist us in making sure APEC07 is both safe and successful."

Brigadier Andrew Smith, Commander of the ADF Joint Task Force supporting the New South Wales Police said, "The ADF regrets any inconvenience caused by these necessary training activities to Sydney residents. I stress that this training is an essential part of our support to the New South Wales Police.

"We will continue to keep the public informed of our training activities, as we work to minimise the impact of our support on the people of Sydney.

"We appreciate the support and understanding of the Sydney community," Brigadier Smith said further.
