Solomon Islands Awards Taiwan's Medical Experts

Solomon Islands Awards Taiwan's Medical Experts

Solomon Islands Ambassador to Taiwan, His Excellency Beraki Jino has presented awards to three Taiwanese medical doctors in recognition of the trio's outstanding work in the delivery of Taiwan's emergency supplies and treatment and for saving lives of victims of the April 2 tragic disaster.

Ambassador Jino presented the awards yesterday, on behalf of the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon Clay Soalaoi Forau during a ceremony attended my representatives from Taiwan's Ministry of Health, Foreign Affairs, representatives from the Hsin Chu, Taichung and Taipei Hospitals, and representatives from TaiwanIHA.

Speaking during the occasion, Mr Jino said the three medical experts, Dr. Chen Hou-chang, Dr. Tseng Shu-chuan and Ms Chou Mei-chu have left the comforts of their homes and families for the earthquake and tsunami-stricken areas in Solomon Islands, therefore 'risking their lives while putting the lives of others first' during the aftermath of the 2nd April earthquake and tsunami.

"They are among the many heroes that saved thousands of lives in the Western and Choiseul Provinces of Solomon Islands during the aftermath of the April 2 earthquake and tsunami", Ambassador Jino said.

Mr Jino presented the awards to the trio who are members of the TaiwanIHA Emergency Medical Mission to Solomon Islands during the 5th-16th April 2007.

"The three medical experts did outstanding work in the delivery of emergency medical supplies and in treating patients in makeshift clinics or hospitals. They not only easily fit in well with the hush environments in the disaster areas but also professionally work in close partnership and side-by-side with other international and national disaster emergency teams that were on the ground", he said.

Mr Jino said the trio must have had their own tales and experience to relate to during their short stay in Solomon Islands, including a boat carrying Taiwan's much needed medical supplies which ran aground on a reef near Gizo, a few hundred meters to its destination.

Mr Jino said the Government and the people of Solomon Islands are very grateful of the invaluable assistance received from the Government and people of Taiwan during the aftermath of the natural disasters.

WE equally admire and value TaiwanIHA's passionate outreach to share Taiwan's health and medical experience with the rest of the world."

"While deadly diseases and natural disasters respect no borders, operations of TaiwanIHA and other like-minded humanitarian and life-saving organisations should also transcend across national boundaries without restrictions to serve lives and fight deadly diseases", he said.
