Access To Condoms During South Pacific Games

Increased Access To Condoms During SPG

Over the past few weeks there has been a call from some members of the local community in Apia asking about the access to condoms for all those who will be enjoying the Games in the coming month.

Condoms play an integral part in any HIV/AIDS Campaign – such as the Safe Games Campaign being prepared for the South Pacific Games here in Samoa. Condoms are a key component of combination prevention strategies, where individuals can choose which method to protect them from HIV.

As a result, condoms will be readily available in Samoa before, during and after the Games. Safe Games Committee Secretary Neli Wightman states ‘Condom use is much more likely when people can access them at no cost, and this is the intention of the Safe Games Committee.’ Therefore, over 50.000 condoms have been imported to Samoa to ensure there will be no shortage of condoms available to the masses.

Not only will each athlete and official be given their own supply in their Safe Games Kits; they will also be available at the Safe Games booth in front of the Government Building in Apia, at a large number of bars, nightclubs, restaurants and hotels in the area, at the National Hospital and at the Samoa AIDS Foundation in Saleufi.

Peer educators will also be available in and around venues to distribute condoms on request. It should also be noted, condoms are readily available in many pharmacies in Apia in spite of common belief. The Safe Games Committee hopes that this will substantially increase access to condoms and safe sex information to all those enjoying the Games festivities.

HIV Positive Athletes Welcome

HIV positive athletes and officials are welcome to Samoa for the Games competition. The Safe Games Committee office in Apia will be a contact point during the Games for anyone living with the virus that wishes to seek support or assistance during their time in Samoa.

Ms. Peati Malaki Maiava will be leading the host operation at the Maxkar Building in Saleufi, and welcomes all to come by and seek information and support in a safe space for people living with the virus.
