Directions For Decision Making In The Pacific

'Future directions for evidence-based decision making in the Pacific'

'Future directions for evidence-based decision making in the Pacific' is the theme for the regional meeting of the heads of Planning and Heads of Statistics (HOPS) which will be held in Noumea, New Caledonia, next week from 17-21 September 2007.

'The aim of this meeting is twofold,' says Gerald Haberkorn, acting Statistics and Demography Program manager at SPC. 'Representing an important governance meeting, these regular meetings give us an opportunity to report back to our national stakeholders and regional and international development partners on activities we have undertaken in recent years, seek feedback on our performance and achievements, and look for guidance for future activities. The second main emphasis is more of a strategic nature, and in direct response to the growing importance our membership places on evidence-based decision making. It is our intention to develop a strategic blueprint for statistical development in the Pacific Island region for the coming 5 - 10 years, and do so in partnership and consultation with our membership and our key development partners, which outlines key thematic and operational priorities, and identifies manageable and sustainable implementation strategies".

Some 60 participants are expected to attend this regional meeting, representing heads of Pacific islands national and territorial statistical and planning agencies, regional and international technical organisations, and key development partners

Following this meeting, a one-day technical workshop on poverty analysis will be convened on Saturday, 22 September 2007.
