Today, (10 October) is World and European Day against the Death Penalty. Parliament's President Hans-Gert Pöttering will open the Plenary session today by reaffirming the European Parliament's opposition to executions throughout the world.

The five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian Doctor accused of deliberately infecting hundreds of Libyan children with HIV/AIDS, condemned to death and held for more than eight years in a Libyan prison will be present in the Chamber today.

The European Parliament repeatedly called for a fair trial and steadfastly opposed their death sentence.
