Japan Assists Nikumaroro Multi Purpose Hall Construction

Nikumaroro Community, located at the Wagina Island in the east end of Choiseul Province, held an official handing over ceremony for a newly built Community Multipurpose Hall on 15th November.

Supported through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Project (GGP), Nikumaroro Community received grant assistance of over SBD$120 thousand aimed to build a Community Multipurpose Hall.

The hall will be used for the indoor programs like community meetings, awareness programs, skill trainings and education programs for children, youth, women and all people of the community.

Kaniborou Bounki, Chairman of Nikumaroro Multipurpose Hall Committee thanked the Embassy of Japan and the Government of Japan for the wonderful project.

"It's the first time for the Community to have a Permanent Community Hall. The hall will be taken care of for a long time by the Community and be use by the future generation and visitors as well."

Nikumaroro is known as the place where the Kiribati culture and hospitality is maintained.

The newly built Multipurpose Hall is expected to be used for the cultural event as well.

The handing over ceremony is attended by Peter Parasaia from the Embassy of Japan.

"We are pleased to see the successful completion of the project. Nikumaroro Community is now expected to look after the Multipurpose Hall properly for the future generation and we hope the Kiribati culture would be conserved using the hall."

The handing over ceremony was witnessed by more than 300 people of Nikumaroro Community.
