Burma: Monks Demand Deaths, Disappearances Inquiry

Burma: Monks Demand Inquiry into Deaths and Disappearances

Press Release : Terry Evans

28 November

In a statement released yesterday, the All-Burmese Monks Alliance (ABMA) called for an investigation into the fate of monks who remain unaccounted for since the September protests.

The statement also condemned the violent response by the Burmese generals to the peaceful protests in September, highlighting the killing of several monks during the junta's raids on over 60 monasteries.

The ABMA was one of the key groups involved in instigating the recent public protests. The group’s leader, U Gambira, was arrested on 4 November after several weeks on the run.

A number of other ABMA leaders remain in hiding.
