PM sees chance for climate change agreement

Gordon Brown has said there is international goodwill for a "binding agreement" on climate change at the ongoing summit in Bali, Indonesia.

Responding to questions during PMQs, the PM said that there was momentum at the summit for establishing a multi-national agreement, including the United States, to reduce carbon emissions and tackle global warming. The UK and Europe have taken the lead by pledging cuts of 20 to 30 percent by 2020 and by up to 60 percent by 2050, he said.

The PM said:

"There is international goodwill for a binding agreement with all countries, including the USA. We are prepared to take the necessary steps forward and I hope other continents will join us."

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn has joined representatives from more than 180 countries at the summit in Bali that runs from 3 - 14 December.
