Japan Assists Ranongga Clinic Rehabilation

The Japanese Government and the Ministry of Health and Medical service have signed a grant contract worth SBD$1,250,000 for the rehabilitation of clinic and stuff houses on Ranongga Island in Western Province.

First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy Hiroaki Fujiwara and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health Dr George Malefoasi signed the grant contract today.

Mr Fujiwara said the support came through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security project (GGP).

“The Japanese people like to express sincere sympathy to the people who experienced loss of beloved family members and damages to their homes and also loss of property as a result of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in April this year,” he said.

He said Japan and Solomon Islands had long maintained closed and cooperative relationship and when this destruction occurs it bring shocked and sadness to people in Japan.

“It was our wish that the people which were affected by the earthquake and tsunami can recover as soon as possible and get back to the normal life as previously enjoyed,” Fujiwara said.

He said the Japanese Government pledge it support to assist in the rehabilitation of the rural Health clinic and stuff houses on Ranongga Island.

The two projects included the rehabilitation of Lare Rural Health clinic and stuff house which cost US$83,066.

It would include one Rural Health Clinic building and Two Stuff houses with respective water tank, toilet and shower facilities.

The second project is the rehabilitation of a Nurse Aid Post and Stuff houses in West Ranongga which cost US$84,132.

These also included a Nurse Aid Post, a stuff house with a water tank, toilet and shower facilities located in Mondo and Kara villages.

Fujiwara said this assistance was a genuine expression of the goodwill of the people of Japan, who always appreciated the long-standing friendship and cordial relations between Japan and Solomon Islands.

He said the Government of Japan recognized the importance of ensuring the access to proper health and medical service in the areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

He said the project which would be implemented by the people of Lare, Mondo and Kara communities in Ranongga would be supported by the Embassy of Japan, the Ministry of Health and Medical service and also Western Province Government.

He added that the project now rest upon the shoulders of the people on each community to work together and ensure its timely completion.
