Fiji Govt: Why SDL Interested In Ports Contract

Why SDL Interested In Ports Security Contract - PM

(Tuesday, 22nd January, 2008, No:014/PMO) WHY SDL INTERESTED IN PORTS SECURITY CONTRACT - PM

Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) awarded the ports security contract to Homelink through a transparent process and on merit, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said today.

PM Bainimarama reiterated that FPCL has its own Board and Management and those who had put in expressions of interest had to comply with a number of criteria set out by FPCL.

Responding to media reports and SDL Party’s concern on the awarding of tenders to Homelink, PM Bainimarama said the awarding of tenders was based on established process and done by the board.

He questioned why the SDL Party was so interested in the Ports security contract when they themselves broke many rules and allowed their cronies and people connected to the party to benefit at the expense of the tax payers and ordinary people of this country.

“ The awarding of contracts to Homelink who are former soldiers of RFMF does not mean that RFMF as an institution is any way benefiting from it.”

He added that Homelink Security was the only company that had met the International Safety Ports Association (ISPS) basic code of providing security at international ports due largely to their close working association with the former ports security personnel.
