Julie Christie Named 'Survival Ambassador'

Multi-award-winning actress Julie Christie was today named as an ambassador for Survival International, the worldwide movement to support tribal peoples.

Christie, who has recently been nominated for an Oscar, has supported Survival for over 30 years, being actively involved in its work for tribal peoples. Speaking in a BBC radio appeal, Christie said, 'I've personally been involved with Survival because it's fighting against the extinction of many groups of human beings.'

Most recently, Christie has narrated a film for Survival's new uncontacted tribes campaign. The unique film is the centrepiece of the campaign, aimed at highlighting the most serious threats to the tribes and featuring previously unseen footage of some of the world's most remote and endangered peoples.

Christie has also been particularly outspoken in support of the Kalahari Bushmen, who were evicted from their ancestral lands to make way for diamond mining. She spearheaded the Boycott De Beers campaign, joining protests against the diamond giant and urging the public to 'boycott De Beers, or have the destruction of the Bushmen on your conscience'.

Survival's Director Stephen Corry said today, 'I'm delighted that Julie Christie, who has been an active supporter of tribal people for decades, has agreed to be our first ambassador. I also want to add my congratulations for the SAG award she has won for 'Away From Her', as well as her BAFTA and Oscar nominations.'
