PM Impressed With Chinese Delegation Presentation

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has offered his support for the development of a cassava-ethanol industry in Fiji.

Speaking after the presentation by the Chinese business delegation led by Fiji's Ambassador to China, Sir James Ah Koy, Prime Minister Bainimarama said the cassava-ethanol industry has a lot of potential to become a major industry in Fiji.

PM Bainimarama said the Cassava- Ethanol industry has potential if developed properly could benefit the rural agricultural community.

PM Bainimarama was informed that the proposed cassava-ethanol project requires minimum of 1,500 tonnes of cassava daily and this could be supplied by our local people to the industry. Any surplus cassava produced by the farmers will also be bought by the company.

The Chinese delegation has proposed setting up a cassava-ethanol industry in Fiji in joint venture with local counterparts.

PM Bainimarama was informed that the proposed cassava-ethanol project can meet the fuel ethanol production on the domestic needs in Fiji and can be exported to surrounding countries such as Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tahiti, Solomon Island, etc.

The multi-million industry proposal includes setting up of small and large cassava farms in rural areas and ethanol production plants promises to create more local employment opportunities.

PM Bainimarama was also briefed on the proposed low-cost housing concept, which aims to provide affordable and decent housing to rural and urban population.

The company that made the presentation was Hong Kong Rapid Grow Investments Co. Ltd and has several fuel ethanol producing plants around the world. The company is also renown for having undertaken low cost housing projects in developing countries.
