PHR-Israel Report: 2007: Challenges & Achievements

PHR-Israel's Annual Report: "2007: Challenges and Achievements"

Dear friends and donors,

We are delighted to share with you PHR-Israel's Annual Report for 2007 [PDF], which delineates our achievements as well as our challenges.

Throughout 2007, we struggled against the exclusion policies issued by the State of Israel against all the populations under its control: the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, migrants, refugees and statusless people, the Bedouin residents of unrecognized villages in the Negev, prisoners and detainees, and all the people who cannot afford supplementary insurance policies, as well as co-payments for medicines and medical services included in the national health package.

Some of the challenges we faced called for unusual action, initiated by PHR-Israel in the beginning of 2008. A delegation and convoy on our behalf entered Gaza and examined the implications of Israel's policies without the mediation of other organizations. In addition, PHR-Israel announced that it was transferring the responsibility for providing medical treatment for asylum seekers and refugees to the Israeli Ministry of Health, and closed its Open Clinic. Yet, it is apparent that in 2008 we will witness a worsening of violations of human rights in general, and the right to health in particular, in Israel and the Occupied Territories.

We would like to thank all our volunteers and members for their hard work, as well as for the professional and patient consultation they provide our staff throughout our advocacy work.

We also thank all our donors, great and small, for making it possible for us to turn our principles and goals from theory into practice.
