UK Gets First Computers For Cops On The Beat
First computers for police on the beat
Details of the Prime Minister's promise to give police on the beat hand-held computers to log crimes have been released today.
A total of 27 forces around the country will share £50 million in funding to phase-in the new technology by March 2009 at the latest. Last year the Prime Minister said the Government would push ahead with the scheme, "cutting paperwork so that officers can log crimes on the spot, stay on the beat and not waste time returning to the station to fill out forms".
Today Home Office minister Tony McNulty said:
"We are investing in new technology to make crime-fighting more effective and to save officers' time. This £50 million capital fund will deliver 10,000 mobile data devices to forces. It is just one element of a range of improvements we are delivering to cut unnecessary bureaucracy, exploit new technologies and enable police officers to spend more time on front-line policing."
