Westpac Donates To China Earthquake Appeal
Westpac Group has donated AUD$100,000 to Oxfam's appeal for the victims of the recent earthquake in China, recognising its well-established links with the local Chinese community in both Australia and New Zealand through its Migrant Banking and Multicultural Banking teams.
Yen Yap, Head of Migrant Banking in New Zealand, says the Chinese Community is deeply affected by the earthquake which struck Sichuan province on 12 May.
"More than 50,000 lives have been lost in the largest earthquake in China for more than 30 years."
"New Zealand has a vast Chinese community, estimated to be around 150,000, many of whom are Westpac clients and have maintained close family ties with China," adds Yen.
"Westpac's donation is an important way to show our commitment to the Chinese community."
Westpac Group Chief Executive, Gail Kelly presented a cheque to Mr Zhang Junsai, Chinese Ambassador to Australia at Westpac's Sydney Head Office last week.
Kelly said, "We are pleased to assist Oxfam with their important fundraising appeal. This donation will go towards relief, rehabilitation and restoration of livelihoods in China."
