Fiji: PM Closely Monitoring Rising Food Prices

PM Bainimarama closely monitoring rising food prices

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has reassured the nation of his keen interest to closely monitor the rising Food and Fuel prices.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama made this comment following his recent participation at the high level conference on Food Security in Italy.

"As a follow up measure, I have now requested the Ministry of Agriculture to provide regular updates on the programmes and activities being implemented to increase food production and assist the affected families."

"I fully share with all of you, your concerns that in recent months the continuous increase in food and fuel prices has affected your families."

"You are all aware that external factors have been responsible for the rising food and commodity prices."

PM Bainimarama said the Interim government has taken several measures to cushion the less privileged in our society from the full impact of the rising prices.

"I am confident that in months to come there will be some stabilisation in food prices. The Interim government has also taken many steps to increase food production."

"Our economy needs to move towards becoming self-sufficient in food. We should produce enough to meet our needs. For this, I would like to encourage our farming community to undertake this responsibility."

"Fiji imports a whole range of produce which can be successfully grown and distributed locally and farmers should take advantage of this and produce more."

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama reiterated his call on families to grow more of their own food in view of the rising food prices.

"Growing your own food means that ensuring access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food for all people at all times."

"It is always healthy and cost effective to ensure there is sufficient supply of food crops for families on your land. This will also help you to save much needed cash for other priority purposes."
