Fiji: Health receives three boats

The Ministry of Health, Women & Social Welfare will receive an additional three boats from the Government of Australia-funded Fiji Health Sector Improvement Programme (FHSIP) in the coming week.

The three vessels will be used to service some of the remote maritime sectors of Fiji in order to improve and enhance delivery of community health services.

The donation brings to eight the total number of small-sized motored boats provided for various maritime medical areas by FHSIP.

The first three vessels (25-feet with twin 30HP Outboard engines) were provided for the West (Nacula, Yasawas) and the East (Vunisea, Kadavu) and Lomaiviti (Gau).

The second batch of three vessels (24-feet half cabin with twin 30 HP engines) went to Kavala in Kadavu, Moala in Lau and Lekutu in Bua.

The last three, on which the presentation ceremony will be based, will provide services to Natewa, Kabara and a 17 footer punt with a 25 HP engine for Matuku Island.

"We are grateful to the Australian Government and fortunate to be supported in these rural health infrastructure initiatives. This will greatly help our staff in accessing those geographically-difficult areas and will also enhance our abilities to reach communities to provide much needed outreach services.

The provision of these boats and accessories plus other rural infrastructure support mechanisms has provided a total cost of over one million dollars plus in the last five years.

Ministry staff and the communities served have benefited greatly from these kinds of donation and support.
