Fiji: Minister has dialogue with the Mayors
The Minister for Local Government and Urban Development, Mr Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi today met with the mayors of all the municipal councils around the country.
The three day meeting held at the Outrigger resorts in Sigatoka concluded today with the Minister having an open discussion and dialogue with the mayors on issues affecting the different town councils.
Some of the issues raised by the mayors were :
- Taxi and bus stand fees
- Market fees
and cleanliness
- Dump fee
- Grants for the Local
Government projects
However, one of the main issues taking precedence over all the other issues was the Local Government reform and review.
The Minister had a good discussion with the mayors on this issue.
Mr Vayeshnoi assured the mayors are welcomed to ask me any questions regarding the reform and stressed it is the best way to enhance the services provided by the councils.
'You have every right in making your views known. The purpose of the review is to bring good governance and accountability in the town councils,' Mr Vayeshnoi said.
The Mayors submitted all their plight and concerns to the Fiji Local Government Association after which a report is expected to be presented for the Minister as early as next week for quick action.
