Cabinet taskforce receives 30 submissions on Air Pacific review

6 August 2008 - The Cabinet Review Task Force into Air Pacific has received in excess of 30 public submissions, revealed the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Electoral Reform, Public Enterprise and Anti-Corruption, Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

The Attorney-General who is a member of the Cabinet Task Force explained the submissions were received from various individuals and organisations.

"Some have called to make appointments for oral submissions and others have called to say that their submissions are on the way," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He added that it would appear that the submissions received were of a similar nature however it was not prudent to reveal what that was.

"The submissions were received in confidence and will be treated as such. This was the guarantee given by Government to those who would be making public submissions."

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also revealed that there would be a need for a specialised person to carry out the inquiry once all the submissions were collated and assessed.

"The nature of the submissions would determine the consultations. All the submissions would be studied carefully."

The Attorney-General concluded that there was no need to be obsessed about a timeline on the outcome of the submissions.

"What is important is to ensure the work is done," he said.

He said the next meeting of the Cabinet Task Force would be the prerogative of the Chair - the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Civil Aviation, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

The Cabinet Task Force was set up on 12 June 2008 by the Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama to review Fiji's position as a shareholder and to assess the many concerns that had been raised by the people of Fiji and the travelling public.

Other members of the Cabinet Task Force are the Minister for Commerce, Industry, Tourism and Communication and the Minister for Finance, National Planning, Sugar Industry and Public Utilities.
