Madrid is a “Safe Choice” for 2016 Olympics and Paralympics
20 October 2008 - The Madrid bid to host the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics is a safe choice because of its financial strength and because preparations are so well advanced, the chief of the bid said today.
“We are ready to go,” said Mercedes Coghen, CEO of Madrid 2016, “all the infra-structure is in place and 70% of the work required to hold the games is in place.
“The Mayor of Madrid and the Spanish Government are fully behind the bid and so is the business and financial community – we have more than 50 sponsors backing the bid,” she said.
The Madrid 2016 leaders believe a well prepared bid is particularly important in the current economic climate and the Mayor Mr Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon has stressed that the global downturn will not affect the city’s planning for the Games.
“The work that has already been done has put us in a strong position to deliver an Olympic and Paralympic Games that are technically strong and also great fun for everyone to enjoy,” he said.
Madrid 2016 is also assuring TV and media executives, rights-holders and sponsors attending Sportel in Monaco that the city’s media and internet infra-structure is world class and able to meet to the needs of global sports broadcasting.
