Barriers To The Ballot Box National Media Briefing
October 30, 2008
Advancement Project Holds Barriers To The Ballot Box National Media Briefing
On November 4, 2008 voting systems will fail somewhere in the United States in one or more jurisdictions in the country. Unfortunately, we don't know where. For this reason, it is imperative that every state prepare for system failures. Each state should take the necessary steps to insure that inevitable voting machine problems do not undermine either the individual right to vote, or our ability to accurately count each vote cast.
What Advancement Project does know is that the likely causes of the failures in the system will be:
• Database Matching ("No Match. No
Vote.")
• Polling Place Resources
• Improper Use
of Provisional Ballots
• Voter
Purges
• Challenges
For the past year, Advancement Project has been actively working on-the-ground to protect voters in: Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
Please join Advancement Project's voting rights attorneys for a media briefing to learn and discuss barriers to the ballot box and what it means for voters on November 4th. Voting rights advocates from across the nation can participate in the media briefing in one of 3 ways: in person at the National Press Club; via telephone and/or via webcast.
Advancement Project will be providing all participating journalists, columnists, and bloggers with a copy of "The Story Behind the Story: A Voter Protection Guide for Journalist."
